Silver deodorant
Sweat doesn’t smell. The bacteria on your skin do. Silver stops those bacteria. That’s the whole idea behind a silver deodorant, and it’s what nuud is built on.
The basics
How does a silver deodorant work?
A silver deodorant puts tiny bits of pure silver on your skin. When the bacteria that cause the smell touch the silver, they stop working and break down. No bacteria, no smell.
Your sweat is still there. It just doesn’t smell. That’s also why there’s no perfume in nuud: there’s nothing to cover up.
And bacteria can’t become resistant to silver, so it keeps working, tube after tube.
Micro, nano, colloidal
Micro silver, nano silver, colloidal silver: what’s the difference?
“Silver” on a label can mean different things. Here’s what each one is, and which one is in nuud.

What does zinc oxide do?
nuud has two ingredients that do the work. Silver stops the bacteria. Zinc oxide works on the sweat itself, so it doesn’t turn smelly. It’s also gentle on skin.

Not an antiperspirant
Is silver deodorant the same as antiperspirant?
No. An antiperspirant stops you sweating by blocking your pores with aluminum salts. Silver doesn’t block anything. You sweat as normal, you just don’t smell. nuud has no aluminum in it.
How often
How often do you put it on?
One pea-size dab per armpit works for up to 72 hours. Most people put it on again every 2 to 3 days, so one 15 mL tube lasts 6 to 7 weeks.

No baking soda, no fragrance, no alcohol and no aluminum. nuud was tested by Derma Consult, an independent German institute, on fifty people with sensitive skin. None of them had a reaction.
The evidence
What the research says
The smell comes from bacteria. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania linked strong armpit odor to one group of skin bacteria, the corynebacteria. That’s why stopping bacteria stops the smell. Leyden et al., Journal of Investigative Dermatology, 1981
Silver has been tested in deodorant. Japanese researchers tested a deodorant made with silver zeolite, a different form of silver than the one in nuud. One application kept the odor bacteria down for 24 hours, and patch tests showed no skin reactions. Nakane et al., Journal of Cosmetic Science, vol. 58
Zinc oxide works on the smell itself. Shiseido researchers compared several metal compounds and found zinc oxide the best at neutralizing the sour-smelling acids in sweat. Kanda et al., Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, 1989

Does silver deodorant work?
Yes, when the silver is there to stop the bacteria that make sweat smell. nuud uses micro silver for exactly that, and one pea-size dab works for up to 72 hours.

Is silver in deodorant safe for my skin?
