Aluminum free deodorant for women

Lots of women switch to an aluminum free deodorant because of yellow stains on white tops, white marks on black ones, or skin that gets irritated after shaving. Here’s the difference between a deodorant and an antiperspirant, what changes when you switch, and what to look for.

First, the basics

Deodorant or antiperspirant?

Antiperspirants use aluminum salts to block your sweat glands for a while, so you sweat less. In the US they’re regulated as over-the-counter drugs for exactly that reason.

Deodorants don’t stop sweat. They stop the smell.

An aluminum free deodorant means you’ll still sweat. What it should do is make sure that sweat doesn’t smell. Sweat barely smells on its own. Bacteria break it down and that’s where the smell comes from.

Why women switch

The reasons we hear most

  1. Yellow stains on white tops

Aluminum salts mix with sweat and build up in the fabric under the arms.

How to tellThe stain comes back after every wash.

What to doAn aluminum free deodorant. No aluminum, nothing to build up.

  2. White marks on dark clothes

Powdery sprays and solids rub off onto fabric.

How to tellWhite streaks on black tops and dresses.

What to doA cream you rub in until it disappears.

  3. Irritation after shaving

Freshly shaved skin is easy to upset, and alcohol and fragrance make it worse.

How to tellIt stings or turns red on shaving days.

What to doA formula with no alcohol and no fragrance. Shave in the evening, apply in the morning.

  4. Wanting fewer ingredients

A long list of names you don’t recognize.

How to tellYou can’t tell what most of it is.

What to doA short list you can actually read.

Making the switch

What to expect in the first weeks

If you’re coming from an antiperspirant, you’ll sweat normally again. That’s the point of a deodorant.

Some people notice more smell in the first week or two while their skin settles. Keep your armpits clean, use a small amount, and give it a couple of weeks before you decide.

If your skin gets red or itchy, stop and let it calm down. There’s more in our guide to underarm rash from deodorant.

How nuud works

No aluminum, no stains, no smell

nuud is a cream. A pea-size dab per armpit rubs in clear, so there are no white marks and no aluminum to leave yellow stains. It stops the bacteria that make the smell, with tiny bits of silver, and zinc oxide works on the sweat so it doesn’t turn smelly.

Tested by Derma Consult, an independent German institute, on fifty people with sensitive skin. None of them had a reaction. One application works for up to 72 hours.

See the natural deodorant

  1. Start clean and dry

Apply after a shower, on dry skin.

  2. Take a pea-size dab

That’s enough for one armpit. More doesn’t work better.

  3. Rub it in

Rub it in until you can’t see it.

Does nuud leave white marks?

No. It’s a cream that rubs in clear.

How do I switch from antiperspirant?
