Eco friendly deodorant
The greenest deodorant is the one you use the least of. Packaging matters, but so does how much product you go through, what’s in it, and how far it travels. Here’s what actually makes a deodorant better for the planet, and where nuud stands, including the parts that aren’t perfect yet.
First, the basics
What makes a deodorant eco friendly
How much you use. A product you apply every two to three days needs fewer refills, fewer boxes and fewer deliveries than one you apply every morning.
What’s in it. Microplastics wash down the drain, and sewage plants can’t filter them out. So they end up in the sea. The fix is to not buy personal care that contains them.
The packaging. What it’s made from, how much of it there is, and whether it can be recycled.
Shipping. Every delivery has a footprint, so fewer deliveries and offset shipping both help.
Reading the claims
Green claims to check before you buy
-
“Plastic free”
Some deodorants really are, in paper or cardboard tubes. Others mean only the outer box.
How to tellThe tube itself is still plastic, or the claim is on the box only.
What to doCheck what the tube is made of, not just the carton.
-
“Biodegradable”
Many materials only break down in industrial composting, not in a home bin or in nature.
How to tellNo mention of how or where it breaks down.
What to doLook for clear instructions on how to dispose of it.
-
“Eco” or “green”
Words with no standard behind them.
How to tellNo certifier, no numbers.
What to doLook for an independent certification and a percentage.
-
Refills
Good if you actually reuse the case, less so if refills come in plastic too.
How to tellEach refill arrives in its own plastic wrap.
What to doCompare how much packaging each refill really saves.
Where nuud stands
The honest version
The tube. It’s not plastic free. It’s made from sugarcane bioplastic, a plastic made from plants instead of oil, and it’s fully recyclable. It’s also tiny: one 15 mL tube lasts most people 6 to 7 weeks.
The box. Unbleached FSC cardboard.
What’s inside. No microplastics. Certified natural by Ecocert, an independent French certifier: 100% natural, 71% organic.
Shipping. CO2-neutral.
The part that matters most
Less product, less of everything else
Most people put nuud on every two to three days, and one pea-size dab per armpit is enough. That’s why one small tube lasts weeks.
Less product to make means fewer tubes, fewer boxes and fewer deliveries. A deodorant that works so well you barely need it is the eco friendly part.
How nuud works
Small tube, long time
nuud stops the bacteria that make the smell, with tiny bits of silver, and zinc oxide works on the sweat so it doesn’t turn smelly. One application works for up to 72 hours.
Nine ingredients, all of them plant or mineral. Vegan, no aluminum, no fragrance, no baking soda and no alcohol.
Start clean and dry
Apply after a shower, on dry skin.
Take a pea-size dab
That’s enough for one armpit. More doesn’t work better.
Rub it in
Rub it in until you can’t see it.
